It’s a shame that the US can't arrest or kill Ahmedinejad while he is in the US. It’s also a shame while the UN protest wasn't small, it wasn’t overwhelmingly huge either and completely filled with American citizens who care about their future who recognize the threat Iran represents.

Obviously the reality is that removing Ahmedinejad will do absolutely nothing to prevent Iran from getting the bomb (and using it), but it’s a first step (and it would make me feel better).

Iran has been showing off their missiles, airplanes, armies, and making other scary noises - but that is not how they’ll nuke the US.

You have to first consider how Iran really fights. Except for against Iraq decades ago, Iran has been using proxies to fight its battles. Proxies like the suicide bombers in Iraq, Hizbollah in Lebanon, and Hamas and Fatah in Israel. And who knows their connection to Islamic Jihad in Egypt?

And of course we can’t forget that Iran’s biggest export after oil is evidently terrorist weapons.

And they’re very good at it. Weapons to Hizbollah. Weapons to Syria. Weapons to Fatah. Weapons to Hamas. Weapons to Iraqi suicide bombers.

Weapons flow through Syria. Weapons flow through Egypt. Weapons apparently even flow through Turkey (until the US says stop).

But when Iran gets the Bomb, they aren’t going to be putting in on top of a missile and sending it to Europe.

Nope.

Iran is going to pack it in a suitcase (or 12) and send them through Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and perhaps even Saudi Arabia. And then they’ll give them to their proxies who will happily blow themselves up in their country of (Iran's) choice.

New York will get one, D.C. will get one. L.A. will get one. London will get one. Israel will get two of course, and a few other cities will get theirs.

It’s about time the world wakes up and realizes what Iran is and what they plan to do.

Iran wants Armegeddon. They go to heaven or they rule the world. Either way they win.

Ahmadinejad wants to be the next Hitler (or Mohammad, both equally mad) and Iran’s clerical leaders want Iran to be the next Nazi Germany - and unless we nip this in the bud now its going to be a lot messier than WW II was.

If we learned nothing from history (and our name isn’t Shimon Peres) the world should have learned this.

Stop Iran now (and Olmert go home).

Joe-
Excellent post.
So you explained the problem.
Now, whats your solution?

Israel attacking Iran? We can't even win a conventional war in our back yard!

US attacking Iran? They are too busy with Irag and SOB Democrats.

France? England? Germany?

sobersubmrnr: Ehhhh....not really. Right now, the Iranians have yet to produce a nuclear device.

1) Sure (?) but the Pakistanis have been rather successful.

2) It's hitting the main-stream media now - special nukes (10 kiloton backpack devices - plutonium implosion variety) are already in the US, smuggled in from Mexico.

3) To be utilised by Moslem enemies using 'Christian or Jewish' identities (specifically names such as David, Richard, Peter).

4) The idea is to use some during Ramadan perhaps, on NY and DC area (perhaps LA and Chicago, too).

Regarding 'dirty nuke' devices, possible but not probable for the exact reasons you mentioned [ie, too easily detectable before use due to radiation signature - also too easily cleaned and too hard to disperse (without a nuclear explosion, of course)].

Finally, you may have missed it in the 'news' - Israel did indeed catch person[s] with one of the small plutonium implosion devices trying to enter from Jordan at the Allenby crossing...

You are underestimating Iran.

Iran is putting all its technical/financial resources into its war programs. They just completely revamped their old US fighter planes into very modern fighters. The Lebanon war revealed they have very good/advanced technical capabilities in certain areas (electronics & communications to name two).

Iran is in this for the long term. Even if they don't have nuclear weapons by this winter, it is only a matter of time before they do.

They don't care if everyone goes poof this summer or in 5 summers from now. They are thinking long term, but unless we nip them in the bud now, we will be unable to stop them once they have just 1 "oversized" bomb on their ballistic missile which can already reach Europe (another acheivement).

Obviously they wouldn't waste their time with dirty bombs, which is why I didn't say they would.

As for getting them through customs, they might "mismark" the containers and pass them off as medical equipment (perhaps inside the equipment), which have similar signatures.

Iran openly stated it goals. It's reaching them. We know how they work. Why ignore what's in front of our face?

And since American policy toward WMD attacks is to respond with nukes since that's all we have, the Iranians had better hope that we don't track a WMD attack back to them.

You miss the point. MAD theory does not work with Iran. If they think they can destroy American society, then they will do it, and damn the consequences to themselves. They achieve heaven either way.

Slight correction: They think they'll achieve heaven. But that thar elevator will only be going down.

3>Bravo Australia

Perhaps if every country issued this edict it would stop the Islamic terrorist wars that are taking place over much of the world. It certainly is a brave and forthright government which can mean what it says.

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia and her Queen at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his Ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown. Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state, and its laws were made by parliament. "If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, thenAustralia is not for you", he said on national television.

"I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia: one the Australian law and another the Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option", Costello said.

Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country. Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off. Basically people who don't want to be Australians, and who don't want to live by Australian values and understand them, well then, they can basically clear off", he said.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote: "IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians."

"However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the 'politically correct' crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia."

"However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand." "This idea of Australia being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle."

"This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom."

"We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, Learn the language!"

"Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture."

"We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us."

"If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like "A Fair Go", then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. By all means, keep your culture, but do not force it on others.

"This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'."

"If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted."

Joe: Truth:
What is this about Jordan?

sober: [1]When did that happen and [1a]where was it reported? [2]Do you have a link to the story?

1) Some time around October 2001
1a) Regular media, first mentioning 'dirty' bomb, then upgraded to 'high-yield' (ie, multi kiloton), then as usual, news blackout after reports that the captured Pakistani was sent to the US for further questioning.
2) The only links left lead to 'Debka.com' [although it was reported to some extent for a short while back then on 'conventional' news and is re-surfacing now.]

sober: Take what Debka says with a grain of salt.

Naturally, that's why I mention specifically that the only surviving link [that I could find in 15 minutes of searching] leads to quotes from the Debka article (I forgot to mention 'unfortunately', meaning that Debka is usually either hokey or promoting someone's agenda, but true things do tend to show up there which verify eventually).

Here's a good article for you.

No, it's not a good article for me, because I have a lengthy attention span and high reading comprehension, so all that article is saying is, "Calm down there folks, nothing to fear from a bunch of drooling monkeys or amatuer nuclear physicist bomb-makers".

The article is flawed by stating assumptions as facts to discount terrorist use of powerfully destructive nuclear devices, as the article states: 'more powerful than a conventional truck bomb', 'a restrictive set of circumstances' (and the only restriction[s] is false - who needs to assemble the device quickly, what does that have to do with anything?)

The article itself clearly mentions the plutonium implosion device, and the only caveat to its employment by terrorists is that it takes great sophistication to produce:

...Using plutonium metal would greatly reduce fissile material requirements, and lead to a much smaller bomb. A design might use the cylindrical collapse of a hollow ring of plutonium metal (as the delta or alpha phase), or cylindrical compression of a solid delta-phase aluminum-plutonium alloy disk. No more than about 10 kg of plutonium would be required in such a design, if a reasonably good reflector were used. Such a weapon might weigh as little as 200 kg.

Given that the system will disassemble well before compression is complete, an accurate symmetrical implosion is not really a necessity. Simply imploding the fissile material at a high rate even if imperfectly (that is, without a true plane or cylindrical shock wave), could produce the necessary rapid compression. For this to work, the fissile material would have to be fairly close to critical at the beginning of the implosion since an imperfect implosion would create unacceptable distortions if the compression factor were very large. As noted earlier in the discussion on nuclear testing, manufacturing a device that is close to critical is extremely hazardous and itself requires substantial sophistication.

Now, since we know who have the funds to finance such a device, the real question becomes, who has the capacity to make such a device (both knowledge, materials and facilities to build it properly), and the willingness to sell it/give it to the terrorist operatives?

Your biggest concern should be Iranian IRBMs. That's why you have Arrow.

I disagree. Egypt is proving to be a more than willing partner (or officially, more than willing to look away partner) when it comes to heavy arms shipments from Iran to the PA.

And Syria is quite happy being the intermediary to Hizbollah who would be quite happy to find any creative way to get it into Israel (and I believe they can).

Meanwhile PA already has already acquired some serious (conventional) stuff, and it won't be dificult for them to get the bomb in and tunnel it to Israel when Iran is good and ready.
